Absa Launches Chatwallet to Enable Users Send And Receive Money Via WhatsApp
Pan African bank Absa Bank, has launched a new smart and convenient banking solution known as “chatwallet”, that allows users to chat and bank through Whatsapp.
The bank disclosed that ChatWallet is part of its commitment to transforming financial accessibility and inclusion by offering a secure and user-friendly way to manage finances without the need for a bank account.
Speaking on the rollout of the new banking feature, Absa’s Managing director Nick Nkosi said,
“The innovative ChatWallet platform not only simplifies transactions but opens doors to a broader spectrum of banking services. With ChatWallet, users can securely manage money without the need for an existing bank account, bridging the gap to financial inclusion. The menu’s standout feature allows a smooth transition to a transactional bank account, unlocking the full potential of digital banking, services for all”.
Also speaking Subash Sharma, chief digital officer at Absa Everyday Banking, Subash Sharma said,
“Our vision and purpose as a bank is rooted in empowering our customers by enhancing access to banking services digitally. We are not only affirming our commitment to improved access to digital payments but also strengthening financial inclusion as envisaged in the South African Reserve Bank’s Vision 2025 statement.”

To be eligible for the chat wallet, users must have a valid RICA’d cell number that is linked to WhatsApp, a valid South African ID number, a phone with a selfie cam, and must not be under 18 years of age.
Absa, which already has a ChatBanking offering on Facebook and WhatsApp, claims to be the only major South African bank offering full banking services directly integrated with WhatsApp.
