M-PESA Expands Cross-Border Mobile Money Services to Ethiopia

M-PESA Kenya has expanded its services to Ethiopia, allowing customers to make mobile money transactions between the two countries via M-PESA Global. This strategic move aims to boost mobile money usage and penetration across Ethiopia, enhancing the local economy and creating new opportunities for individuals and businesses in the region.

“This collaboration aligns with our mission to deliver innovative financial solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. With this service, we are making cross-border transfers and bill payments more accessible, efficient, and cost-effective,” said Esther Waititu, Chief Financial Services Officer at Safaricom Kenya. “This partnership will benefit customers who need to send money to Ethiopia and offer businesses a reliable, affordable transaction option.”

Elsa Muzzolini, Chief Financial Services Officer at Safaricom Ethiopia, highlighted the importance of the partnership, especially in light of Ethiopia’s revised forex policy. “The extension of services with M-PESA Kenya comes at a crucial time, encouraging the diaspora and business owners to embrace digital payments for sending money home and funding their operations. This collaboration will promote the adoption of digital payments across the region,” Muzzolini noted during the signing ceremony.

Beyond Ethiopia, M-PESA allows customers to send and receive money in over 190 countries, making it a preferred mobile money platform for both personal and corporate transactions globally.
