MTN Nigeria Powers Digital Economy, Contributes 7% to GDP – Karl Toriola

MTN Nigeria, a leading telecommunications company, is making significant strides in driving Nigeria’s digital economy. According to the company’s CEO, Mr. Karl Toriola, MTN alone contributes 7% to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Speaking at the TeXcellence 2024 conference, Toriola highlighted the crucial role of the telecommunications sector in Nigeria’s economic growth. He emphasized that the sector, as a whole, accounts for 14% of the country’s GDP.

MTN’s evolution into a technology company (Techco) has the potential to further propel Nigeria’s economic growth. Toriola shared insights into the company’s ambitious projects, including the construction of the largest data center in West Africa and the expansion of 5G services.

However, Toriola also acknowledged the challenges hindering digital access in Nigeria. He pointed out that 71% of Nigerians struggle to maintain regular internet connectivity due to affordability issues.

To address this, Toriola called for collaboration among industry stakeholders, international partners, and the government to create a conducive environment for digital innovation. He emphasized the importance of investing in digital infrastructure and fostering a culture of curiosity and ingenuity among the Nigerian people.

By leveraging its significant contributions and future plans, MTN Nigeria aims to play a pivotal role in achieving Nigeria’s vision of a trillion-dollar economy.
