Techstars Launches Accelerator Programme in Botswana to Boost Regional Startups

Techstars has introduced a new accelerator programme in Botswana, designed to support and scale startups in the Southern African region. The initiative offers startups access to critical resources such as mentorship, funding, and Techstars’ expansive international network.

This expansion is expected to drive economic growth, innovation, and cross-border collaboration within Southern Africa. It also reflects Techstars’ broader strategy to identify and invest in high-potential markets. While Africa hosts some of the world’s fastest-growing economies, many startups face hurdles, including limited funding and restricted access to global networks.

Botswana, known for its stable governance and ambitions for tech-led economic diversification, is an ideal location for Techstars’ new accelerator. The programme positions the accelerator as a transformative force in the region, fostering innovation and encouraging entrepreneurship.

Techstars has a history of supporting African startups. In 2022, it launched the ARM Labs Lagos Techstars Accelerator in Nigeria, which focused on fintech and proptech. The Lagos programme welcomed 12 startups from Nigeria and Kenya in its inaugural cohort, achieving early success. However, it was discontinued in November 2024 after two years of operation.

The Botswana accelerator aims to build on these experiences, offering mentorship, funding, and resources that enhance startup resilience and attract investor interest. This initiative is also expected to foster economic integration in Southern Africa, using Botswana as a hub for regional innovation.

Additionally, the programme aligns with Botswana’s national priorities. Historically reliant on diamond mining, the country is striving for economic diversification through technology and innovation. Techstars’ presence could accelerate these efforts by nurturing a new generation of tech-driven enterprises, helping Botswana emerge as a leader in the Southern African innovation ecosystem.
