National Australia Bank Partners with Google Cloud to Advance Multi-Cloud Strategy
2 min read
National Australia Bank (NAB) has officially adopted Google Cloud as part of its long-term digital transformation and multi-cloud strategy. The move positions NAB as one of the few global financial institutions leveraging all three major cloud providers—Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and now Google Cloud to enhance system reliability and scalability.
According to NAB’s enterprise technology executive, Steve Day, the adoption of Google Cloud has resulted in an 89% reduction in critical and high outages, making the bank’s systems “significantly more reliable” for customers. Day noted that nearly 90% of the bank’s applications now run on the cloud, a remarkable leap from just 2% in 2018.
The multi-cloud approach has allowed NAB to build an architecture that is portable, scalable, and capable of running anywhere, ensuring resilience across its digital infrastructure. The partnership with Google Cloud complements NAB’s ongoing collaborations with AWS. its first cloud provider since 2013 and Microsoft Azure, which was introduced in 2020 and extended to 2031.
The transformation places NAB in a competitive position within Australia’s banking sector, where cloud adoption has become a key focus for innovation and efficiency. Competitors such as Bendigo and Adelaide Bank migrated their digital banking systems to Google Cloud more than two years ago, while Westpac is currently executing a five-year cloud transformation project with AWS. Meanwhile, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) recently announced the completion of its SAP core banking migration to AWS, signaling a broader industry shift toward cloud-based operations.
As part of its continued modernization efforts, NAB also announced a corporate restructuring this week, promoting Shane Conway to group executive of transformation effective December 1, 2025. Conway will oversee the delivery of NAB’s ongoing technology modernization and simplification agenda.
The adoption of Google Cloud marks another milestone in NAB’s digital transformation journey, reflecting the bank’s commitment to building a more agile, resilient, and customer-focused financial ecosystem.
